The role

As a key member of the Unix Systems team you will use your exceptional communication and people skills to help provide foundational UNIX services and support to the Shaw organization. You will provide excellent customer service to our clients and by building and managing UNIX systems that support applications that improve our company’s ability to provide valued services to our customers. In this role, as a Tier 2 escalation point, you will be called upon to assist in providing your experienced troubleshooting skills to restore our UNIX services when they are in need of repair and be able to understand what happened.

Our team is involved in projects that require UNIX services so you will be asked to help with those and will require your guidance and expertise to ensure their success. You will use your critical thinking in helping our team evolve and transform our processes in how we support and deliver our UNIX services that will help meet the needs of our customers today as well as tomorrow using automation and modern technologies and best practices.

A typical day

• A typical day could have you working on building UNIX services for our internal customers, maintaining servers by patching or upgrading, and modifying server configurations requested by our customer.
• You may also be involved in helping troubleshoot a service or application that may be dependent on one of our UNIX services.
• Our team is involved in projects that require UNIX services so you will be asked to help with those and will require your guidance and expertise to ensure their success.
• You will communicate daily with our clients, vendors and team members and require excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• We are also looking to improve our services through efficiencies like automation and you would be also be expected to work on developing playbooks and process improvements with the focus of continuous improvement.
• You will need to be able to be able to execute quickly and have a measured sense of urgency.

Your skills/experience

A core foundational knowledge and 5-7 years of experience with the following technologies is a must:
• RedHat Enterprise Linux versions 6, 7 and 8
• System Administration (backups, change management, patching, etc.)
• Ansible version 2.7
• VMware ESX 6.5

Knowledge and a keen interest in the following areas would also be favorable:
• RedHat Satellite version 6
• Scripting and Python programming
• Oracle Solaris, HPUX operating systems and hardware
• Knowledge in other supporting technologies – Storage, Database, Microsoft Active Directory
• Networking
