Senior Data Solution Architect

Department name: Information Technology
Business unit: TOPS
Position ID: J1120-1928

A little about us

At Shaw, we’re proud to be leaders in a movement that brings Canadians the connectivity they need to fuel their lives. We’re making bold moves to connect Canadians and we’re always on the lookout for go-getters that are committed to disrupting the status quo. Does that sound like you? We’d love to meet you.

The role

As a Sr. Data Solution Architect, you will be considered a “go-to” data resource, an expert in understanding our data, including knowledge of the upstream systems and the business activities and logic that influence the way data flows through them. Daily partnership will occur, supporting peers internal to Data Strategy and the data citizens across the company embedded into various Business Units, being called upon to dive in to learn and connect systems, business understanding and their combined impact on data.
Constantly problem solving, you will be challenged to hear a data need and to find the ideal technical solution, considering the appropriate data and tool(s) for the task, including providing the support and training your stakeholder requires to support the solution long term. In hearing a need, it will be crucial to understand the business impact and actionable insight that will be taken, allowing the recommended solutions (ranging from simple workflows or queries, to complex architecture models designed to support enterprise projects) to be fit for purpose. The successful candidate is one who is passionate about exploring the options that a challenge brings and providing creative solutions to them.

A typical day

This role is a “thinker-doer”, with each day bringing a diverse combination of:
• answering questions/solutioning with data users (pointing people towards the data they’re looking for, helping them with their workflows, providing suggestions on improving accuracy or efficiency of queries)
• working with those same stakeholders to encourage and support them in building and maintaining the solutions themselves
• investigating our data (hunting down the cause of anomalies, diving into connecting business processes with their corresponding data, self-learning), with the goal of having a broad understanding of upstream and downstream systems, being able to quickly investigate, identify and solve problems across the environment
• partnering with other Data Strategy team members to build reusable data layers (tables/views) in our data warehouse in support of our target architecture and enterprise initiatives
• advocating data literacy and building a culture of data driven decisions within our data community
• treating every interaction as a chance to further the knowledge and understanding of those they work with

You will be challenged to be a leader on the projects you’re assigned to, and your recommendations and summaries of the things that you learn will be trusted.
