The role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Data Governance Analyst in our Calgary office reporting to the Manager, Data Governance & Quality. The Data Governance Analyst focuses on development and management of Data Governance tools and artifacts, as well as adoption of these tools and artifacts by data stewards, custodians and users across the enterprise.

The successful candidate will play a key role in achieving the Data Strategy team’s vision of creating a data literate and data-driven enterprise culture where employees proactively use data to drive and support business decisions by supporting data governance initiatives. The Data Governance Analyst is a recognized data expert accountable for driving the design, awareness and adoption of data governance practices, tools and artifacts within the enterprise and fosters the development of a data culture where data owners, data stewards and data custodians understand and embrace their roles in ensuring that data is secure, reliable, trusted and fit for purpose.

A typical day

• Develop and manage the Enterprise Business Glossary
• Facilitate the development of business terms and definitions by engaging the appropriate data stakeholders, particularly data stewards, and gaining alignment across multiple stakeholder groups
• Work with data stakeholders to ensure the correct application of data definitions across the business
• Curate the data dictionary and link the data dictionary to the Enterprise Business Glossary
• Steward the governance processes around developing, approving, and maintaining terms in the Enterprise Business Glossary
• Take ownership of the Enterprise Business Glossary
• Support overall data governance initiatives within the Data Strategy team
• Collaborate with Manager, Data Governance & Quality to drive the adoption of the Data Governance Framework across the enterprise.
• Collaborate with Manager, Data Governance & Quality, Lead, Data Governance and Lead, Master Data Management to support development and evolution of the overall Data Governance framework including development of specific artifacts such as the Data Governance Playbook and ensuring alignment with data security, regulatory and privacy requirements
• Provide guidance and requirements for Data Governance to various initiatives within the Data Strategy Program.
• Participate and provide input into the selection, implementation, and management of enterprise data governance tools.
• Develop training materials and tutorials as needed to support the onboarding of data owners, data stewards and data custodians onto the Data Governance framework
• Support implementation of specific data governance policies and processes as required

Your skills/experience

• A wide variety of degrees will be considered but a typical candidate may have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant domain such as Management Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related discipline
• Minimum of 5 years of related experience
• Any Data Governance, Applicable Vendor or Industry certification is preferred but not mandatory
• Enthusiastic and passionate evangelist of a data-centric culture, with a distinctive focus on empowering all data stakeholders, from stewards to users
• Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and application of data security, regulatory and data privacy requirements within data solutions
• Hands-on experience designing, developing, or implementing Enterprise or Department level Business Glossaries and Data Dictionaries
• Experience with implementing and/or managing vendor enterprise data governance tools is an asset
• Experience in facilitating process discovery session or data flow discovery sessions, and development of process maps or data flow maps is an asset
• Knowledge of Data Management, with a focus on Data Governance and Data Quality
• Detail oriented and thorough individual who is also pragmatic and practical
• Problem solver and knowledge seeker
• Strong relationship-builder with enablement and coaching skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; capable of working across multiple business stakeholders and IT. Experience or training in Technical Writing or Linguistics is an asset
• Flexible, creative, proactive, driven, productive and able to work under pressure
