Career Opportunity: Editorial Assistant (Morning Show)

The Global Television News Department has an immediate full-time opening for Editorial Assistant in Toronto, Ontario, for the Morning Show shifts being 5am-1pm, Monday to Friday.

Reporting to the Managing Editor, the following is a paraphrase of the primary functions, but does not outline all of the duties and responsibilities that may be assigned to this position:

Accountabilities / Responsibilities:

• Pitch daily news stories
• Develop original stories for local news
• Assist the producers, assignment desk, reporters with interviews
• Assist in production of newscasts including writing Voice Overs, use of production fonts and general knowledge of line-up
• Write copy for newscasts
• Identify and research daily stories.
• File research into ENPS
• Monitor wires, twitter and social media for stories and breaking news
• Roll prompter and split scripts
• Chase interviews as needed
• Gather clips and elements for daily news stories
• Be able to check amnets for viz and clips
• Notify producers/online/news crew of breaking events
• Knowledge of ENPS, Aurora, MOS
• Answer newsroom phones and connect callers to appropriate departments
• Shotlist interviews and make EDL’s in Grass Valley

Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications:

• Post-secondary education in a related field with minimum of 2 years previous experience in television news
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
• Experience listening to multiple police scanners
• Minimum six months of television writing experience
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team setting
• Positive can-do attitude
• Reporting experience an asset
