Career Opportunity: Anchor/Producer

Global BC, a division of Shaw Media, is looking for a Full Time Anchor/Producer to host a new half-hour news talk and information program on its 24-hour news channel BC1.

Reporting to the Global BC News Director, the successful candidate will be responsible for writing, producing and delivering content on BC1 and other Global BC newscasts.

This position will involve a regular weekday shift, and may include early mornings, evenings and weekends.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

As an Anchor/Producer, the following is an outline of some but not all of the primary functions and responsibilities for this position:
• Anchor and produce a half hour interactive news talk show;
• Anchor various news programs for BC1 and other shows, as required;
• General assignment reporting for BC1 and Global BC;
• Vet copy and take a leadership role in editorial decisions;
• Write and vet news copy for on-air and online, including intros, questions, story leads and bumpers for news programs;
• Initiate and monitor story development, contacts and maintain quality of production;
• Monitor all news sources, including feeds, wires, and social media;
• Chase breaking and developing news stories – including coordination of live coverage and setting up interviews for broadcast; facilitating pictures and video for online coverage;
• Communicate breaking or changing news situations with online and other show producers and anchors;
• Assist in the coordination of reporters, editors, cameras when necessary;
• This position will contribute content for the Global BC website.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
• Degree or diploma in Broadcast Journalism from a recognized institution;
• At least 5 years’ experience as news anchor and/or reporter in a major market;
• Experience anchoring and interviewing in live unscripted situations;
• Demonstrated interest in news, breaking news and developing stories;
• Experience anchoring live breaking news, and performing live hits as a reporter and/or anchor in the field;
• Proven ability to write accurate, concise, creative news copy for broadcast and online;
• Ability to develop sources, contacts and research original content for a talk show format;
• Willingness and ability to use digital technology and social media to generate content and develop audience interaction;
• Should be familiar with current state of online news reporting and publishing;
• Familiarity and ease in using Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media;
• Must have excellent people skills with the ability to work independently, effectively, and cooperatively in a team environment.

This is a Group 5 position under the current collective agreement.
